With the cold and flu season on the horizon and rising coronavirus rates, health experts urge Americans to begin protecting themselves with flu vaccinations.

Flu season typically occurs during the fall and winter months. In the Northern Hemisphere, it usually starts in October and can last until May, with peak activity often occurring between December and February.

In the Southern Hemisphere, flu season generally runs from April to September. However, the timing and duration can vary each year.

The best time to get a flu shot is early fall, ideally by the end of October. This timing helps ensure that you are protected before flu activity increases. Getting vaccinated early in the season is recommended.

However, getting vaccinated later can still be beneficial, even into January or beyond, as flu activity can last into the spring.

Flu shot immunity typically lasts for about six months. This duration is generally sufficient to cover the peak of the flu season.

However, the level of immunity can vary depending on factors like age and health status.

How common is the flu?

The flu is quite common and affects millions of people each year. In the United States alone, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that the flu results in between 9 million and 41 million illnesses annually.

The number of cases can vary significantly each season, depending on factors like the severity of the flu strains that are circulating and the effectiveness of the flu vaccine.

From employer incentives like gift cards or bonuses to discounts and rewards offered by health insurance plans, these opportunities can add up.

Additionally, some pharmacies provide special promotions for those getting their flu shots, and avoiding the costs of potential flu-related medical care can further protect your wallet.

In addition to the financial perks above, these are a few other options that may result in saving money from getting a flu shot.

While getting a flu shot is primarily about protecting your health and the health of those around you, there are a few ways you might indirectly benefit financially:

  1. Employer Incentives: Some employers offer incentives, such as gift cards or bonuses, to employees who get vaccinated. Check with your HR department to see if such programs exist.
  2. Health Insurance Rewards: Certain health insurance plans provide rewards or discounts on premiums for getting vaccinated as part of a wellness program.
  3. Pharmacy Promotions: Some pharmacies other than those above also offer discounts or coupons for store purchases when you get your flu shot there.
  4. Avoiding Medical Costs: Getting vaccinated reduces your risk of getting the flu, which can help you avoid medical expenses related to doctor visits, medications, or hospitalizations.
  5. Maintaining Productivity: Staying healthy during flu season means fewer sick days, which can be financially beneficial if you work where time off is unpaid or affects bonuses.
