How Building Your Own GPT Can Make Life Easier for Doctors

Ever feel like there just aren’t enough hours in the day? Okay, to be specific: enough hours on the “fun” stuff?

As a busy doctor, your calendar is probably full of appointments, charting, reviewing cases, rounds, etc. After all that, how much time do you have for family, friends, or even personal goals such as exploring investments or starting a side hustle?

Almost none if we’re being honest. So, how do we change that? You got options. One, you can cut off some of your commitments (very unlikely), or two, find an alternative like hiring an assistant (can be costly).

Either of the two can be good but what if you can get the best out of both worlds? Like an awesome new tech!

Okay, you must have heard of ChatGPT, but do you know that you can build your own GPT? Think of it as creating a dedicated personal assistant that learns what you feed it, consistently improves, helping you both in the clinic and beyond.

In this article, we will explore how to develop a custom GPT which can transform your professional as well as personal life. We will guide you through how to get started, making practical examples to suit specific challenges and aspirations that doctors can face.

Note: While these are general suggestions, it’s important to conduct thorough research and due diligence when selecting AI tools. We do not endorse or promote any specific AI tools mentioned here.

Why Not Just Use Regular ChatGPT?

It’s not that we’re telling you not to use the usual, it’s just that a custom GPT can do more for YOU.

Think of it like this, regular ChatGPT is like a helpful friend who answers any question you have, but it’s pretty general. Custom GPT, on the other hand, is like that same friend, but you can tell them exactly how you want them to respond—whether it’s adjusting their tone or focusing on the things that matter most to you.

And you “make” that friend. It’s a bit more personal and tailored to what you need.

Things You Can Do with a Custom GPT

  1. Let it Handle Your Repetitive Tasks

Whether it’s writing follow-up emails and referral letters or composing patient education materials, GPT can save hours a week by automating repetitive writing tasks.

Example: You can create a GPT to help draft appointment reminders or general health tips for patients, making communications more efficient.

  2. Have it Do Things Outside of Medicine

Whether you are making some investment in real estate, running your wellness blog or planning a next vacation GPT will help with all things-from analyzing financial reports to crafting social media posts.

Example: You use GPT to draft thank-you notes for patient referrals or streamline responses to frequently asked questions about your side business.

  3. Make it Help Your Life Be Easier

If you’re thinking about having more time for your kids’ soccer games or catching up with old friends. Offloading menial tasks with GPT allows you to breathe and focus on what matters most.

Example: You can set up a GPT to organize and summarize non-urgent emails, giving you more time for family activities or hobbies.

How to Build Your Custom GPT

How to Build Your Custom GPT

Step 1: Identify Your Needs

Start by figuring out where you need help. Are you overwhelmed with patient communications or need support with analyzing investments? Write down these pain points. For example, you might spend hours writing discharge instructions—GPT can help with that. You can provide it with templates and train it to customize them for each patient case.

Once you’ve identified your needs, check if you’ve subscribed to ChatGPT Plus (for $20/month) to unlock customization. Then, go to “Explore GPTs” and click on “+ Create” to begin.

Step 2: Gather Relevant Data

Gather any files, emails, or templates related to the tasks you want GPT to handle. This could be discharge instructions, financial statements, or even scripts for your YouTube channel. Make sure the data is clean and organized.

When you’re ready, you’ll have two options:

  • Create: Quick and simple—just enter the details of your GPT.
  • Configure: More advanced—ideal if you want to fine-tune the tool to your specific needs.
Create or Configure

Step 3: Build, Configure, and Test

Start by inputting your task descriptions and test the GPT. For example, you might configure a GPT to draft patient summaries in your hospital’s EMR format. The more you interact with it, the better it will get. It’s like residency for your GPT—it learns and improves with feedback!

Step 4: Keep Your GPT Growing

The beauty of GPTs is that they grow with you. Keep feeding it new data, adjusting prompts, and providing feedback. The more you use it, the smarter it becomes. Be sure to set boundaries so your GPT stays focused on what you need.

Step 5: Do Your Due Diligence

Always double-check the information GPT gives you. It can make mistakes or have gaps, so it’s important to review everything yourself.

Remember, AI is a tool to help, but you’re the one who makes the final decisions. If you’re working with sensitive info, like medical records or financial details, make sure everything is secure and follows the rules for your field.

    Conclusion

Doctors often wear many hats professional and personal demands, all juggling to achieve their goals.

Having your own GPT is like having an extra pair of hands (or brain cells) on your team. It can do stuff diligently, making it a very powerful way to help take control of your time and future.

So, why not give it a try? Start small, think big, and watch how this tool can transform your life inside and outside the hospital walls.
